Yes, you can measure the quality of your tap water with a TDS meter. The TDS meter measures the amount of dissolved substances (Total Dissolved Solids) in your tap water. A higher TDS value indicates more contamination in the water. Order a free TDS meter and measure your tap water.

Unfortunately, our Dutch tap water can also contain contaminants. The water utility company filters out many substances from our drinking water, but it is unable to remove all harmful substances. For example, medication residues and PFAS are substances that are still present in our Dutch tap water.

From the water utility company, the water travels a long way before it comes out of the tap. Old pipes can release excessive levels of lead into the drinking water. Even in newly built homes, it is advised to flush the drinking water pipes before each use for the first 3 months after completion.

No. Boiling kills bacteria and viruses, but it does not remove PFAS, limescale, heavy metals, nitrates, or drug residues; these simply remain in the water. Because water evaporates during boiling, the concentration of these substances may even increase slightly. If you want to get rid of them, reverse osmosis is the most effective method: the membrane blocks up to approximately 99% of these contaminants
, including PFAS. Therefore, boiled water is not the same as osmosis water.
