Tap water quality

Where does our tap water come from?

Most tap water in the Netherlands is extracted from groundwater; the rest is obtained from surface water and a tiny amount of dune water. Our soil is becoming increasingly polluted and depleted, unfortunately deteriorating water quality. Surface water is contaminated most quickly, but groundwater is too, as pesticides and toxins seep into the soil. As a result, we have to dig ever deeper for "purer" groundwater.

What does the water company in my region do to filter my tap water?
  1. Water companies carry out the following 7 steps to treat water into drinking water:

Pretreatment: Raw water from the source (rivers, lakes, groundwater) is first passed through screens or grids to remove large particles such as branches, leaves and dirt.
  2. Coagulation and flocculation: Chemicals such as aluminum sulfate or iron(III) chloride are added to the water to cause particles to clump together (coagulate). The resulting flocs are then mixed with the water by stirring.
  3. Sedimentation: The water is led to a sedimentation basin, where heavier particles and flocs settle to the bottom and form a layer of sludge.
  4. Filtration: The water flows through filters that can consist of several layers of sand, gravel, and activated carbon. These filters remove the smaller particles still present in the water.
  5. Disinfection: To kill or neutralize pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa, the water is disinfected using chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet (UV) light.
  6. pH correction and stabilization: To prevent pipe corrosion and improve water taste, chemicals are added to regulate the water's pH and alkalinity.
  7. Distribution: The treated water is stored in reservoirs and distributed to households and businesses through a network of pipes.
What is the quality of tap water in the Netherlands?
  • Unfortunately, our Dutch tap water can also contain contaminants. The water company filters many substances from our drinking water, but it's not capable of removing all harmful substances. For example, pharmaceutical residues and PFAS are substances that are still present in our Dutch tap water.
  • From the water company, water travels a long way before reaching the tap. Old pipes can release excessive lead levels into the drinking water. Even in newly built homes, it's recommended to flush the drinking water pipes every time the house is used for the first three months after completion.
Are there harmful substances in our tap water?
  • Hazardous substances 100% in the water:
  • 100% of heavy metals
  • 100% of PFAS and pesticides
  • 100% of pathogenic bacteria
  • 100% of medicine and drug residues
  • 100% of dyes
  • 100% of chlorine compounds

  • Lead was used in the construction of drinking water pipes until around the 1960s. It was discovered that lead dissolves slowly in water. This is because water has a high solubility. That's why it's so effective at cleaning. It absorbs all kinds of substances, unfortunately, including harmful ones. The maximum permissible lead concentration in the Netherlands according to the Drinking Water Decree is 10 µg/l. In various practical measurements, concentrations of 100 to 150 µg/l have been measured. Lead is particularly harmful to growing children. It restricts brain growth and can cause IQ deficits. Sources: https://www.rivm.nl/bibliotheek/rapporten/609400003.pdf https://www.rivm.nl/nieuws/lood-in-kraanwater-soms-te-hoog
  • Effects of lead exposure: For babies bottle-fed with tap water from these pipes, the contribution to total exposure can be as high as 80 percent. Lead exposure can affect children's IQ (intelligence quotient). In adults, it can increase the risk of kidney disease or lead to higher blood pressure.
Can I test the quality of my water?
  • Yes, you can measure the water quality of your tap water with a TDS meter . The TDS meter measures the amount of dissolved solids (Total Dissolved Solids) in your tap water. A higher TDS value indicates more contamination in the water. Order a free TDS meter and measure your tap water.

Filter water

What is the purpose of a water filter system?

Clean and pure tap water should be a given, but unfortunately, tap water in the Netherlands also contains substances that are not beneficial to our health.

Market research shows that 62% of people recognize that keeping tap water in the Netherlands sufficiently clean is becoming an increasing challenge. We see this too.

A water filter system's purpose is to remove dirt, bacteria, chemicals, and other contaminants from tap water. With a water filter system, you can drink pure water that's truly good for your health.

What are the benefits of filtered tap water?

Get the purest water from your own tap. The Source uses reverse osmosis technology to filter water. This technology removes up to 99% of unwanted substances from tap water. This ensures you get the purest water from your own tap.

The filtered water tastes fresher and makes the tea richer and fuller.

Filtering water with The Source is electricity-free, takes up minimal space, and consists of a single component. Read more about the benefits under "Our water filter system."

Why should you consider a water filter system?

"Good" drinking water is vital, but what exactly is good? Our drinking water contains unwanted substances like bacteria, pharmaceutical residues, viruses, ions, pesticides, and so on that don't belong there. So why wouldn't we eliminate these substances entirely?

In our extensive research into the best water filtering technology, we chose reverse osmosis technology. The Source is therefore a water filter system that filters very finely and removes up to 99% of these unwanted substances.

With a water filter system you drink pure water that tastes fresher.

Is filtered tap water better for you than bottled water?

This depends on the quality of the tap water and the quality of the bottled water. In some cases, tap water may be better than bottled water, while in others, the opposite may be true.

It is important to test the water quality and decide what is best for your situation.

Water filter systems can be a good choice if you are concerned about the quality of your tap water and are looking for a more sustainable way to get clean water.

What are the ways to filter water?

What is the difference between vitalized water, Kangen water, reverse osmosis, and filtered water?

How does a water filter system work? Most water filter systems operate by passing water through a filter medium, such as carbon, ceramic pores, screens, or reverse osmosis. This filter medium removes contaminants from the water.

Is water filtering the same as descaling?

No, this system goes further than descaling the water.

Does the system also descale? Yes, but not for the entire house.

The water filter system (The Source)

Use this section for any descriptive text you need to fill out your pages or to add introductory headings between other blocks.

What types of water filter systems are there?

There are several types of water filter systems, such as carafe filters, tabletop filters, under-the-tap filters, and installed whole-house filters. Some systems are designed to remove specific contaminants, while others are more general and can remove a broader spectrum of contaminants.

How does your water filter system work?

Our water filtration system, The Source , uses advanced reverse osmosis technology. This technology filters tap water at the molecular level, removing up to 99% of all unwanted substances—think nanoplastics, PFAS, pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, viruses, bacteria, heavy metals like lead and zinc, and even taste-impairing substances like chlorine.

The system consists of several filtration steps:

1. Pre-filter – removes coarse particles such as sand and rust.

2. Reverse Osmosis Membrane – This is the heart of the system and removes virtually all contaminants from the water, leaving only pure water molecules behind.

3. Carbon post-filter – provides a fresh, neutral taste.

4. Remineralization
– adds healthy minerals on demand for a balanced composition.

In addition, The Source:

Powerless – sustainable in use

Compact – fits easily in any kitchen cupboard

fully recyclable , including filters

Equipped with a patented water-on-water storage tank for maximum efficiency and minimal water loss.

Tested and certified to the NSF/ANSI 58 standard by IAPMO.

In short, The Source offers you spring-quality water, straight from your own tap – pure, safe and delicious.

Should I get the 50 or the 180?
  • The Source 50 produces over 110 liters of clean water per day, more than enough for a family of up to six. If you use the system very intensively (such as in an office), we recommend the Source 180. Contact us to discuss the possibilities.
  • How long before the barrel is full?
  • About 35 minutes, depending on the water pressure. The system fills continuously, so you don't have to wait until it's completely full.
  • How much water comes out of the system?
  • 5.7 liters of clean water from a full tank, a total of 113 liters per day.

How much wastewater does this system produce?
  • We filter glasses per minute. Our system also produces a glass of "dirty" water (1 glass of pure water = 1 glass of water you flush down the drain). You want this water for health reasons, not to save water. Wastewater is water that you flush back (clean water, residual water with the waste products) into the sewer system. So you double your drinking water consumption. Yet, our "waste" is the lowest of all reverse osmosis systems.

What are the options?
  • 3-way
  • 1-way
Can I keep my own faucet? / Does my faucet need to be replaced?
  • If you choose a 3-way tap (all-in-one), we'll replace your current tap. If you choose a 1-way tap, we'll drill a small hole in your countertop, and your existing tap will remain.
  • Probably not, unless the customer opts for a separate fresh water tap. For this, we'll need to drill an extra hole in the countertop.
Does it work with a Quooker?

No, unfortunately, we don't currently connect The Source to a Quooker or other boiling-water tap. You can, of course, always opt for a separate one-way tap in addition to your boiling-water tap.

Can I also connect the machine to a boiling water tap (such as Quooker)?

  • Yes, but as a separate system with a one-way tap. So the Quooker water isn't filtered.
